Create a Rock Storage Box for those Fun Geology Finds!

Are you looking for a fun project and a clever way to store all those rocks, minerals, and shells that your kids pick up and stuff in their pockets? Try making an Egg Carton Rock and Mineral Collection Box! All you need is an egg carton, some paint, and your rocks and minerals!

Supplies for Your Rock & Mineral Storage Box activity:

  • Egg carton
  • Paint
  • Stickers
  • Glue
  • Beads
  • Glitter
  • Any other messy craft item you have on hand!

PAINT: First, paint the egg carton a solid color to cover up any markings on the box. If you have a foam egg carton, use foam-safe paint. The solvent in spray paint will dissolve foam. You can find foam-safe paint at craft stores.

DECORATE: After your base coat of paint dries, add decorations using different paint colors and patterns or glue on beads or glitter.

FILL THE BOX: If your children are like mine, they probably have a pile of rocks stashed somewhere in the house that you can use to fill the box. If you know the names of your rocks and minerals, you can create a name tag with a small slip of paper and secure it in a section of the box with the sample.

FIND MORE ROCKS: Take your kids on a nature walk and see if you can find more rocks and minerals for their box. These boxes also make a great place to stash fall leaves and pine cones too!
