Pumice Igneous Rock
Pumice is a light gray, extrusive igneous rock. Major minerals include feldspar, quartz and mica. Pumice has a vesicular texture having many holes. Pumice forms outside of the volcano when some of the lava becomes frothy as they quickly cool. The gasses in the lava expand and escape forming air hole or vesicles in rock. Pumice can form in the air or on top of a lava flow. Samples of pumice will float on water.
An information card with details on the rock formation, mineral content, characteristics, and uses is included. Typical samples sizes are generally 1-2 inches in length or width but can vary based on availability and natural formation.
